About Me
Hi, I'm Steve Fishwick, a Platform Architect specializing in GPU and SoC design with over 18 years of experience in hardware engineering and semiconductor development. My work has contributed to powering the graphics capabilities of devices used by millions worldwide.
My journey began in academia with undergraduate bachelors and masters degrees in microelectronics and software engineering. This led to a PhD that combined chemistry and semiconductor physics by fabricating electronic devices at the molecular scale. This multidisciplinary curiosity shaped my career ever since.
Over the years, I've helped bring numerous TVs, phones, computers, and other products to market for various companies — most recently at Apple creating technologies that power several billion devices globally. There's a scarily high chance you either own or have used a device containing my work.
I'm drawn to systems where inputs yield predictable outputs. Code. Logic. Simulation. If I can take something apart and put it back together I'm happy. If I can make it better in the process I'm happier still.
Every chip I design, program I write, and system I architect is essentially an act of rebellion against the non-determinism of the real world. I've chosen to try and impose order in my day job but lean into the entropy of humans. Deep down I know some chaos is necessary. I've got three daughters, a beautiful wife, and a dog — a life packed with glorious, unpredictable mess. That balancing act works for me.
I hover somewhere between an inventor and problem solver — but ultimately I'm someone who just likes to get things done and the juicier the problem the better. I try to be an intentional creator but disguise the effort required behind a dose of dry wit and technical clarity.
Right now, I'm particularly fascinated by the intersection of hardware architecture, machine learning and AI — where will it take us next both technologically and as a society? We seem to be in the early stages of an industrial revolution — it's happening in our lifetime — and it's happening fast. Exciting and challenging times ahead.
